Explore Your City

On my days off now I try to ride my bike more often and explore Orlando since it still feels like a new city to me. In August it will be a year since I’ve moved here and it is finally starting to grow on me. I can definitely appreciate the local movement out here. It’s nice to see a strong community that supports local businesses and I’ve come across some great spots so far. But today, I finally went biking on the Orlando Urban Trail, which is a paved trail that is great for bikers, runners, walkers, etc. It’s only about 3 miles, but it takes you to great parts of Orlando including the Mills50 district, Loch Haven Park, and other great areas!  Here are some pictures from my bike ride today:

The beginning of the trail!

They even had a bike stand with tools and air pump! How awesome is that?? Good job, Orlando!

I had to stop and take a picture of this. Although California will forever have my heart, the trees in Florida definitely have me swooning.

Such a lovely day in this Florida HEAT!

This is a Southern Live Oak that pictures don’t do justice for. The branches were so spread out I should’ve taken a pano.

But look at its amazingness and beauty! Yes I know, I’m a little obsessed with trees. 🙂

This tree has been here since the signing of our Constitution!

Afterwards, I went to grab a bite to eat and went to Dandelion Communitea Cafe which I’ve been wanting to check out for a while. This place is super cute and definitely has that hipster vibe going on. It’s set up like a house and has different rooms you can dine in and has art work on the walls from local artists that you can buy. This cute little spot is known for their tea so I ended up ordering their Giddy Up (their most popular item) and an iced Flower Power sweetened with agave honey. The tea was so refreshing and exactly what I needed after biking in the hot Florida sun. The food was really good as well. It was like a taco bowl concoction with vegan goodness.

Outside of the cafe. The arrows point to other local businesses in Orlando. So cute!

And then, right next door was a Bodhi Garden with a real bodhi tree! The garden was set up by the Florida School of Holistic Living and the tree itself was planted back in 2007 with community members who each added one shovel-full of soil along with their prayers for peace and harmony within the community. Umm…pretty cool, right? Take a look at the tree and its beautiful heart-shaped leaves:

This Bodhi tree is a fifth generation descendant from the Bodhgaya grove in India, where the Buddha reached enlightenment!

Here’s another part of the lovely garden.

Definitely channeling my inner hippie today! =)

That’s about it from my awesome bike ride today. Hope you enjoyed and were able to get a little local taste of Orlando for those of you who are new to the city, planning to move here, or are visiting. There’s definitely more to this city than just theme parks and I’m excited to explore and share these great finds with you guys!

Hope you’re having a fabulous day!
